Nottingham welcomes international plastic surgeons for annual scientific meeting

20th June 2013

BAPRAS today starts its annual summer meeting in Nottingham, to discuss UK and international plastic surgery innovation.

The BAPRAS Summer Meeting, which is being held in the East Midlands Conference Centre from 19 to 21 June, will showcase the latest advances in plastic surgery globally. With the theme of ‘collaboration’ it will play host to plastic surgeons from across the world, including Russia, China, Germany, Chile, Georgia, Pakistan and Australia, to discuss plastic surgery techniques that are helping patients overcome medical problems of both form and function.

The event is being hosted by BAPRAS President Graeme Perks who is Head of the Plastic, Reconstructive and Burns Surgery Department at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.

Mr Perks said: “This meeting will gather international plastic surgery experts to celebrate new developments in both reconstructive and aesthetic surgery, and importantly share lessons and initiatives to further transform the lives of patients in the UK and across the world.

“For the first time we welcome Presidents of plastic surgery associations from Germany, Pakistan and Georgia, alongside other international colleagues, who are leading experts in their fields. It is an honour to host the event here in the Midlands.”

The meeting will include symposia on overseas and charitable work, surgical training, with invited lectures on facial paralysis in childhood, breast reconstructive surgery, rhinoplasty and research trials as well as discussing the outcomes and implementation of the government’s recent Keogh review into cosmetic surgery regulation. At the meeting, BAPRAS will also launch a new Special Interest Group for ‘Major Trauma’, to bring together UK experts and help ensure the continued development of this growing healthcare discipline, which addresses the treatment of multiple, serious injuries.

BAPRAS President Graeme Perks is currently involved in a number of plastic surgery projects at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. He has contributed to the development of the Nottingham Breast Reconstruction service, the East Midlands Soft Tissue Sarcoma service, the Nottingham Head and Neck service and currently serves as Chairman of the East Midlands Skin Cancer Group.
