BAPRAS position on hymenoplasty

5th November 2021

We, as the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAPRAS),  were disturbed by the recent news story regarding medical professionals performing hymen reconstruction to ostensibly 'restore virginity' before marriage.

Whilst we recognise that this practice is currently legal, we do not condone it- as it is not representative of the values of both our profession and subspecialty, which upholds the highest ethical and clinical standards.

The recent coverage in the national press has highlighted a lack of probity- with practitioners willing to treat patients they have not seen, do so under false pretences and- appallingly, express the intention to continue to do so, even if the procedure were to be made illegal.

We unequivocally denounce this practice.
