Newcastle plays host to world's leading plastic surgeons for annual scientific meeting

11th July 2012

Over 250 plastic surgeons will attend the BAPRAS Summer Meeting, which is being held in The Sage Gateshead from 11 July to 13 July with other sessions taking place at venues across Newcastle, and will examine the latest advances in plastic surgery from across the world.  With the theme of ‘art and science’ it will explore the twin disciplines of aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgery, highlighting exemplary work carried out in 2012 and showcasing plastic surgery techniques that are helping patients overcome medical problems of both form and function.

The event is being hosted by BAPRAS President Richard Milner who works as a consultant plastic surgeon at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, and is a senior lecturer in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.

Mr Milner said: “It is a great honour to be welcoming the annual BAPRAS scientific meeting to Newcastle and celebrating new developments in reconstructive and aesthetic surgery which have helped to transform the lives of patients across the world.

“This year we are delighted to be hosting national and international experts in the field of aesthetic plastic surgery to share insights in specialist areas of rhinoplasty and breast augmentation, and to welcome reconstruction experts with specialisms including cleft lip and palate repair and ear reconstruction. The programme highlights the breadth and quality of plastic surgery care available globally.

“We hope the meeting will continue to provide experts with an opportunity to share plastic surgery insights and learning and ultimately help improve the standard of patient treatment and care, and best practice on an international level”.

The meeting will include symposiums on rhinoplasty and breast augmentation and a comprehensive update on PIP implants, including discussion around the need for establishing a compulsory national breast implant registry.

BAPRAS President Richard Milner is one of the UK’s leading consultant plastic surgeons. His current projects include a study into reconstruction surgery after sarcoma and research into upper limb surgery; exploring compression of nerves in upper limbs and clinical assessment of tendon transfers.
