Mr Nigel Mercer
Nigel Mercer was appointed as a Plastic Surgeon with an interest in cleft and hand surgery in 1991 and has morphed over the years into one of the cleft surgeons in the South West Regional Cleft Unit and the Senior Plastic Surgeon in Bristol. He has presented and published surgeon-specific cleft data for many years and has championed the role of the psychologist in the work of Plastic Surgeons, helping to set up 'Outlook' at Frenchay Hospital, and also chairing the steering group for the Centre of Appearance Research at the University of the West of England.
The Presidencies of BAPRAS, BAAPS and EASAPS have allowed Nigel to be at the heart of the public discussion about the rationalisation and regulation of surgery in general and aesthetic surgery and aesthetic medicine in particular. He was the Lead Delegate for the British Standards Institute Mirror Group at the CEN negotiations on aesthetic surgery in Europe, which has now been published. He continues to represent BAPRAS with the MHRA and is chairing a working party for them studying ALXL in the U.K.
