BAPRAS and ASPS share best practice at annual conference

7th December 2012

Today, BAPRAS collaborates with colleagues from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) on a combined day, sharing innovations in plastic surgery at the annual BAPRAS Winter Scientific Meeting.

The four day conference, which started on Tuesday, is hosting presentations on groundbreaking work across a range of plastic surgery areas and, for the first time, is devoting a full day to be delivered in partnership with the ASPS. Today’s events include stand out plastic surgery sessions with the ASPS on stem cells, breast reconstruction and face lifting.

Gregory Evans, President of the ASPS, said: “I’ m delighted to be involved in the first combined meeting between BAPRAS and ASPS. Our key goal is to share intellectual and educational techniques and information related to plastic surgery procedures.

“In addition, the two organisations have much in common; including scope of practice issues, breast reconstruction, ensuring that all of our members are certified and that our patients understand the importance of choosing a certified plastic surgeon. This is a great opportunity for the two organisations to expand their relationship and work on joint issues together.”

The BAPRAS Winter Scientific Meeting has also featured the McIndoe lecture from Professor Maria Siemionow, one of the world’s leading experts on face transplantation, and sessions from Professor Moutapha Hamdi and Professor Steven Hovious who, along with a range of BAPRAS experts, are sharing advancements in perforator flaps, refinements in breast reconstruction and surgery of the upper limb.

Richard Miner, President of BAPRAS, said: “The number and quality of presentations submitted this year has been greater than previous years and has made the work of the selection committee particularly challenging. The meeting programme provides a blend of education and debate over a variety of topics and provides a springboard for scientific discussion.

“It is a particularly great pleasure to welcome our American colleagues to our annual meeting, to share learning and best practice in the field of plastic surgery. Our combined day will include cutting edge sessions on stem cells and their place in plastic surgery and a session on aesthetic surgery devoted to advances in face lifting.

“Our meeting with the ASPS, and shared commitment to drive best practice, research and innovation, will ensure that we, as an Association, continue to deliver the highest standards of plastic surgery safety and care for patients in the UK.”
