Hypospadias occurs in approximately 1 in 300 male births. Primary surgery is performed by plastic surgeons, urologists and paediatric surgeons. Within plastic surgery there is an increasing trend towards specialisation in this field, with some plastic surgeons developing a special interest. Other congenital abnormalities of the penis and absence of the vagina are treated by plastic surgeons.
