This is a specialist area requiring the expertise of plastic surgeons, neurosurgeons, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, ophthalmologists, paediatricians and others. At present there are supra-regional centres performing this work on the small numbers of children and infants having complex congenital cranio-facial abnormalities. There is also a need for other plastic surgery centres to undertake cranio-facial surgery required for the treatment of cancer and trauma. This less specialised, mainly adult cranio-facial surgery can be done in any major hospital where plastic and neurosurgeons can work together.
