Advice for trainees planning a career outside the UK.
Surgical Training in the United Kingdom has undergone enormous change in recent times. The normal course for training a plastic surgeon in the United Kingdom begins with basic surgical training (BST) after a satisfactory completion of pre-registration house officer year (PRHO). After 2-3 years BST the trainee may sit for the MRCS(Eng)/ AFRCS(Ed)/AFRCS(Glas)/FRCS(I). After successful completion of BST the trainee applies in open competition for higher surgical training (HST), this lasts 6 years in plastic surgery. The Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship, FRCS (Plast), is taken after a satisfactory fourth year of higher surgical training assessment. On completion of training a ‘certificate of completion of specialist training’ (CCST) is given. Intercollegiate Board in Plastic Surgery Overseas trainees may join the scheme at any stage. Overseas trainees will initially experience difficulties in finding a job. They should initially look for standalone SHO jobs which are available as a third year of BST. The Specialist Registrar (SpR) again represents a difficult transition. All posts must be interviewed and all must be in open competition.
